Commercial Battery Storage In Trafford Park

Paying red-band prices at 5pm while your roof exported all weekend?

Battery storage sized to Trafford Park shift patterns, red-band tariffs and leased buildings

Battery storage in Trafford Park tends to be the second conversation, not the first. A site puts solar on the roof, watches the monitoring for a few months and notices two things: the array spills surplus onto the grid on Saturdays and Sundays when the warehouse is half empty, and the electricity bill still carries its heaviest charges between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays. A battery deals with both. It soaks up solar that would otherwise be exported for modest money, then discharges it into the most expensive hours of the day. On sites without solar it can still charge from the grid overnight and shave the evening peak. We size every system from your half-hourly data, and because so many Park units are leased, we plan the location, fire separation and landlord consent before we quote.

What a battery does for a Trafford Park site

The value comes from moving energy in time. Here is where that shows up on a typical Park bill.

01

Cuts the red band out of your bill

SP Electricity North West's distribution charges are steepest from 16:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, all year. For smaller non-domestic sites, the red rate in the 2026/27 schedule is several times the amber rate. Discharging a battery through those three hours is the most dependable saving it makes.

02

Keeps weekend solar on site

A distribution unit that runs a reduced crew at weekends may produce more solar than it uses from Friday evening to Monday morning. Rather than exporting it, the battery holds that energy for Monday's opening load.

03

Protects your agreed capacity

If a site breaches its maximum import capacity, the excess is charged for the whole billing period, not just the half hour it happened. A battery can top up during short spikes from compressors or dock levellers so the meter never sees them.

04

Useful even before solar arrives

If your landlord has not yet agreed to panels on the roof, a battery in the yard or a plant room can still charge on cheap overnight green-band rates and discharge into the red band. Solar can be added later and coupled in.

05

Rates-exempt alongside renewables

Storage used with onsite renewable generation is covered by the business rates exemption in England until March 2035. A battery that mainly trades with the grid is not obviously covered, so we design the controls around your own solar first.

06

Short cable runs on compact plots

Many Park units have tight yards and a single intake room. We place the battery as close to the main switchboard as fire separation allows, which keeps cable costs down and makes isolation simple for your maintenance team.

Batteries in leased and older buildings on the Park

A battery is a heavier landlord question than solar. It sits on the ground or in a plant room rather than on the roof, it weighs a great deal, and insurers want to know about it. On the 1920s brick warehouses near Trafford Road, internal floors and fire compartments need checking before a cabinet goes anywhere near them. On the modern sheds off Europa Way and Barton Dock Road, an outdoor containerised unit on a concrete plinth is usually simpler.

We bring the landlord's agent in early and give them the same pack your insurer will want: product data, fire separation distances, ventilation and an isolation plan. Where a system reaches 1 MWh or more, national planning guidance encourages talking to the fire and rescue service before applying, so we fold that into the programme rather than discovering it late.

If you are still deciding on the roof itself, our page on commercial solar panels in Trafford Park covers lease terms, older roof types and planning on the estate.

The install

Fitting a battery on a Trafford Park site, step by step

  1. 1

    Read the half-hourly profile

We plot a full year of your consumption against your solar output, if you have any, and look for the gaps: weekend surplus, red-band peaks and any capacity breaches.

  2. 2

    Choose size, chemistry and location

The proposal sets out battery capacity, inverter power, where the unit sits and the expected saving, split into red-band avoidance, solar shifting and capacity protection so you can see which part of the case does the work.

  3. 3

    Landlord, insurer and G99

The network operator treats a battery as a generator in its own right, which means a G99 submission to SP Electricity North West. At the same time we send the landlord and insurer their packs, with fire separation and ventilation set out clearly.

  4. 4

    Base, delivery and lifting

Outdoor units need a level plinth and a clear route for the delivery lorry and crane. We book lifts outside your busiest loading windows so the yard keeps moving.

  5. 5

Install the battery and its controls

The battery, power conversion equipment and protection are installed to BS 7671, including the new stationary battery requirements added in Amendment 4 in 2026, and the controller is linked to your meter and any solar inverters.

  6. 6

    Commission against real load

We test charge and discharge under live site conditions, confirm the export limits in your connection agreement hold, and check the system drops out cleanly if the grid fails.

  7. 7

    Tune the schedule after handover

Over the first few weeks we watch the data and adjust the charge and discharge windows to match how your shifts really run, then hand over the settings and the monitoring login.

Guarantees and warranties

Who answers for your Trafford Park installation, and for how long

There are two layers of cover on a commercial installation, and it pays to know which is which. The first is the installer's workmanship guarantee. It covers the way the system was put in: the fixings through your roof, the cable runs, the terminations, the protective devices and the commissioning settings. Its length and terms are written into the quotation, so you can read them before you sign rather than discover them afterwards.

The second layer belongs to the manufacturers. Panels normally carry a product warranty and a separate performance warranty, which promises a minimum output after a set number of years. Inverters and batteries have their own terms, often with cycle or throughput limits on storage. These vary by product, so every proposal names the exact models and attaches their warranty documents.

A guarantee is only as good as the install underneath it. That's why the structural check comes before the design is fixed, why every string is tested and recorded to BS 7671, and why the grid connection is commissioned to the settings SP Electricity North West has approved. If something we fitted fails because of how it was fitted, we come back and put it right.

Battery, solar alone or neither: how it looks on the Park

The table below compares the three options in general terms. On a leased Park unit with a weekday-heavy load and quiet weekends, the solar-plus-battery column is where the gap between options tends to be widest.

What sets the price of a battery in Trafford Park

We do not publish a per-kWh battery price, because nothing sourced and reliable exists for commercial systems. These are the factors that move it.

Capacity and power rating

How many kWh you need to store and how fast you need to deliver them both drive the cost. A system sized to cover three red-band hours costs more than one built only to catch weekend surplus.

Where it can physically go

Older brick buildings near Trafford Road and the canal often lack an obvious outdoor spot, which can mean internal fire-rated rooms. The newer sheds along Europa Way and Ashburton Road West usually have yard space for an outdoor cabinet, which is cheaper.

Grid and switchgear work

If your main board needs upgrading, or SP Electricity North West asks for export limitation or protection changes under G99, those costs are added to the battery itself.

Coupling with existing solar

Adding a battery to an array that is already on the roof may need an AC-coupled inverter or changes to the existing one. A battery designed alongside new panels usually works out cheaper per kWh stored.

Battery storage in Trafford Park: common questions

Is battery storage worth it for a Trafford Park warehouse that already has solar?

It often is when the monitoring shows regular weekend or lunchtime export and the bill carries heavy red-band charges. If your site uses almost all its solar already and runs little load after 4pm, the case is weaker, and we will tell you so.

Do I need planning permission for a battery?

Permitted development rules contain no class for battery storage, so a container or cabinet outside may need an application to Trafford Council, and a battery inside an existing building may not. We check this case by case. For systems of 1 MWh or more, national planning guidance encourages early contact with the fire service.

We lease our unit. Who owns the battery at the end?

That should be set out in writing with the landlord before the battery is ordered. Common options are that you remove it, the landlord buys it at an agreed value, or it stays with the building. We help draft the technical side of that agreement.

Will older buildings near the Ship Canal cause problems?

Floor loading and fire compartments are the main issues in the early brick warehouses, not the canal itself. A structural check tells us whether a floor can carry the weight. If not, an outdoor unit or a ground-floor plant room is the usual answer.

Can a battery keep us running during a power cut?

It can, but only if it is designed for backup, with the right changeover equipment and a defined set of essential circuits. Most peak-shaving systems are not set up that way by default, so tell us at the start if resilience matters to you.

What Trafford Park businesses say about us

We're a new name, so you won't find a wall of reviews here yet. We'd rather show you nothing than make some up.

For a project this size, reviews were never the best evidence anyway. Ask any installer you're considering for a reference site you can visit, a year or more of generation data from a system they fitted, and the grid connection paperwork from a past job. If they can't produce those, keep looking.

Bring us your data and your lease

Send twelve months of half-hourly consumption and we will show you, in plain numbers, what a battery would do on your Trafford Park site and whether it is worth doing now or later.
